Red Gold is a new multi-channel moving-image work by Big Four Holiday Camp: Jack Mitchell, Aaron Claringbold, Eliki Reade and Rebecca McCauley. It explores changing cultural relationships to Place and the Sacred through an animal at the centre of one of the world’s largest single-species fisheries.

Traditional Owner perspectives meet histories of migrant fishing families, shipwreck, Catholic ritual, industrial processing and global commodity chains. The same creature means something different depending on who is looking, where they stand and what their life depends upon.

Strange Engine is providing long-term development and dramaturgical support as years of research, consultation, relationships and footage begin to find their form. We are helping the artists trace connections, test how the material moves across multiple screens and create a structure spacious enough to hold different histories without flattening them.

The long form lives in the making itself: repeated journeys, conversations, permissions, images and returns. Some projects need distance before their shape becomes visible. We are here for the long haul, helping Red Gold carry its many worlds to the screen.
