FEED is a new participatory performance system we are creating with theatre and technology maverick Robert Walton. People receive private audio prompts through their phones. Their words, movements and decisions meet inside a shared space, where the system listens, interprets and feeds fragments back into the action.
A memory becomes an instruction. A gesture reappears in someone else’s task. A story returns in another person’s voice. With every cycle, the line between author, audience, performer and machine becomes harder to locate.
Jason and Robert first worked together on the award winning transmedia thriller Vanitas, which transformed a smartphone into an intimate, and slightly suspect guide, through a cemetery. FEED takes that private relationship and multiplies it. A single voice in one ear becomes a network of bodies, stories and shifting instructions.
What happens when the systems telling our stories begin to organise us in return? Who authors the version that survives? Who carries responsibility for a machine’s misreading? Who gets to resist, revise or leave? And who is directing whom?
Development takes place in the Strange Engine studios in October 2026. From January to late March 2027, we will continue making FEED through an extended residency at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund Germany. Then another Residency in Turin, Italy in May
The first public version of FEED will emerge in Melbourne in late 2027. Stay tuned.
