Notes:

Notes is a series of large-scale drawings and paintings of small, handwritten notes. They are developed from some of the 200 notes, memos, instructions, requests and demands that I have collected in public spaces in Melbourne.

In their original contexts the notes seem mundane but when considered closely they make compelling artefacts. Each message carries a unique sensibility.
The handwriting and marks on the paper are visually intriguing. Enlarged onto paper and canvas up to three metres wide, each note takes on a monumental quality. With scant explanation, readers are left to read between the lines. The ordinary messages may produce unexpected conversations. They may become poetic, philosophical, political, even profound. Behind the banality and humour, they may even provoke thought about how we manage social space and relate to one another.

The work was created during a studio residency kindly supported by Strange Engine in Preston, Melbourne in 2020-21.
